Acer and Sweeden-based game creator Starbreeze AB have announced the establishment of a joint-venture, tentatively named Acer Starbreeze, specifically for design, production, marketing and sale of StarVR (virtual reality) head-mounted displays.
The joint venture will have initial paid-in capital of NT$800 million (US$24.7 million), with Acer and Starbreeze to each hold a 50% stake. It will be established in Taiwan in third-quarter 2016, Acer said.
StarVR provides immersive VR experience with ultrawide 210-degree horizontal field of view, with customized optics. This allows users to move their eyes freely in any direction and continue to be immersed in the virtual world, without the sensation of wearing blinders that conventional VR displays bring, the companies said. Powered by a dual Quad HD display architecture, one per eye, StarVR provides a visual experience with a total panoramic definition of 5120×1440 pixels.
The joint venture will begin production of StarVR head-mounted displays in small volume in 2016 and start volume production in 2017, Acer noted.
To enhance cooperation with Starbreeze, Acer will subscriber 2-year convertible bonds worth US$9 million to be issued by Starbreeze.
