Just when you thought Codemasters brilliant off-road racer could not get any better, it just did.
Dirt Rally now has PlayStation VR support! As in right now: you can go and download it to your PS4 and start navigating your way around rocky outcrops and thick tree stumps from this most immersive of perspectives. I received an email earlier today from Australian distributor Namco Bandai confirming the 11pm AEST green light, adding another great feature to an already great game.
In fact, Dirt Rally has been a pivotal release for Codemasters – a racing genre specialist with decades of great titles and well-earned fan respect. The glitzy, gymkhana driven Dirt series – which evolved out of the harder-edged, point-to-point experience of the Colin McRae series – had begun to grow tired. Dirt Rally was initially a small release on PC: a tester to see if there remained any interest out there for a super challenging off-road racer that got back to the basics of long, winding point-to-point stages that are all about rewarding pure skill.
There was: in fact, so positive was the response that the game would later be released on PS4 and Xbox One. Plus a Dirt 4 has been announced for 2017 that rolls the series back to something closer to its roots. In fact, my understanding is the existence of Dirt 4 is only thanks to the reception to Dirt Rally. So well done fans for backing it in!
Now the PS4 version of Dirt Rally has received VR support, adding to an already big game. Fans get six full rally locations, three rally cross events and the Pike’s Peak hill climb, alongside vehicles from every era dating back to the sixties. As the proper race fans rally sim, Dirt Rally and PSVR are made to be together, with in-car driving, very tricky stages, weather effects and a robust damage jumping to life.
And PSVR needed a good racing game. DriveClub tried hard, but is very much a launch title and was in desperate need of being usurped by something better. Something better just arrived. Be warned, though: it’s no walk in the park. You will have to earn your times in Dirt Rally the hard way.
